Red Pepper Rant

You may be surprised to know that I don’t grocery shop.  I love it. But I rarely do it anymore.

With a toddler and in infant the grocery store can be a scary place. Pardon me if I would like to avoid screaming children in the checkout line. And isn’t that always when they scream? Not in the produce department. At the checkout. Cue the judgemental (ok, mostly sympathetic) looks. I’ll pass.

Lately I’ve been taking advantage of Online Shopping through Save-On Foods. It’s amazing. For $7.95 my groceries show up at my door. That’s literally the best $7.95 I spend all week. Hands down. I love this online service but one thing really bugs me when I’m “shopping” for my groceries.  I have to work really hard to find Real Food. I don’t know how they organize their search engines, by popularity perhaps? Not sure. But take a look at what I’m talking about.

I searched for ‘Red Pepper.’  Simple enough.  Here is what showed up on my screen…

Butternut Squash and Pepper Soup (no thanks)

Red Pepper Flakes (fair enough)

Roasted Red Pepper Salad Dressing (unrefrigerated, eww)

Red Pepper Cheese (ok, yummy)

Black Bean and Red Pepper Soup (nope)

Roasted Red Pepper Pasta Sauce (again, not so much)

Red Pepper and Chicken Alfredo Frozen Dinner (100 times no.)

Red Pepper Fajita Spice Packet (bleh)

Salt and Cracked Pepper Popcorn (!?)

You know where I found the REAL red peppers?  Second page. Half way down.  I don’t think I could have been more clear with my search and yet I’m bombarded by processed food products.  Let’s just say I only kind of wanted red peppers, maybe I’m going to try and make a new recipe with whole foods for my family. But then BAM!  Maybe it’s easier to just buy the boxed soup or frozen dinner? Of course it is.

I’m sure the markup on all these packaged foods will make Save-On a lot more money then the lonely red pepper. But shouldn’t we make it easier for people to Eat Real Food?
